Back to School

All Clayton County Public Schools will reopen their doors on August 8th for the 2016 – 2017 school year. Here is some useful information.

SCHOOL PROCEDURES

 Please note that the earliest students can be dropped off at school is 7:15 a.m.
 School begins at 7:45 daily.
 Students are considered tardy if they arrive after 7:45 a.m.
 Daily checkouts end at 1:45 p.m. (no exceptions).
 School ends at 2:15 p.m. daily.
 Early Release Days: school ends at 1:15.

Attendance: Please be familiar with of the District Attendance Protocol. Students must be in school, on time each day! Missed instruction due to absences (excused or unexcused) has a negative impact on achievement and how our school is rated by the state. Jackson Elementary follows the District attendance protocol with no exceptions.

As a reminder, any out of school suspension (OSS) day counts as an absence. Therefore, it is critical that all students maintain good behavior throughout the school day. We thank you for being an active participant in your child’s education, and we look forward to your continued support throughout the 2015-16 school year.

School Supplies: Grade level recommended school supply lists are available on our school website or in the front office.

Personal Property: The school is not responsible or liable for any missing or lost personal items, including cell phones. It is recommended that all non-school related, personal items remain at home.

General Behavior Expectations: It is important for each parent and student to know and understand that we have high expectations for discipline at Jackson Elementary School. Research indicates that if discipline is in place, academic performance is higher. Each staff member at Jackson is directed to appropriately and respectfully correct inappropriate behavior when it is observed. It is expected that students accept correction in a respectful manner and that parents support our discipline efforts that are in place. This process provides a safe and orderly environment for students to learn and thrive academically. Please make sure you read and review the CCPS Behavior Code with your child which can be found in the CCPS Student Handbook.

Cafeteria Guidelines: Due to our increased awareness in health guidelines and consideration for students with allergies, outside food from restaurants such as McDonalds, Chic-fil-a, Wendy’s, etc. will not be permitted in the cafeteria. There will be no exceptions.

ALL students must follow our school behavior expectations while in the cafeteria for the safety of everyone. Students are expected to:

 Walk in and out of the cafeteria.
 Pick up food, condiments, utensils and milk before leaving the serving line.
 Remain seated at your assigned table until dismissed.
 Be respectful and obedient.
 Talk quietly.
 Use your manners.
 Clean-up after yourself.

Parent Resource Center:
Jackson has a wonderful Parent Resource Center specifically designed for parents. Our Parent Resource Center is located inside our Media Center. We invite parents to utilize the center anytime between the hours of 7:45 – 3:15. There are brochures on many subjects such as homework help, getting along with others, study habits, and self-esteem. Most documents are available in Spanish and English. We also have computers dedicated for parent use in the media center with internet access. Our Parent Resource Center is provided by our Title I funding.

Classroom Observations & Visits: ALL classroom visits require a 24 hour notice. Please call 678-610-4401 to schedule an appointment or contact your child’s teacher. CCPS Visitor Policy guidelines must be followed (see CCPS website or Student Handbook for details). Visitors should sit quietly in designated area to avoid disruptions to the learning environment. Visits will be no longer than one hour in length. Cell phones should be turned off during visits to prevent a disruption to the learning environment. Birthday Celebrations You are welcome to celebrate your child’s birthday at school by bringing a store bought snack for your child to share with classmates during lunch. Please check with your child’s teacher ahead of time for the correct lunch time, as occasionally lunch times may be adjusted for performances, testing, etc.

TRANSPORTATION

ALL students must be picked up no later than 2:45 p.m. daily. We have an after school program (Campus Kids) available if you are unable to pick your child up daily by 2:45. There are also many daycare providers who provide transportation to and from our school daily.

School Bus Behavior and Procedures

Riding a school bus is a privilege, not a right. The bus driver is the adult in charge on the school bus. ALL students are expected to sit quietly and follow all bus rules (see student handbook). We are always happy to assist with bus problems; however, the driver should be the first contact if your child is having problems on the school bus. It is the student’s responsibility to tell the bus driver about any problems that occur on the bus, and then the bus driver is responsible for reporting any incident to school administrators. As a reminder, any proven bus behavior problems will be treated as a discipline issue and will appear on the student’s discipline record per regulations in discipline reporting. Please remind your student to follow our bus safety rules so everyone can enjoy their ride to and/or from school!

Car Rider Procedures

Car riders may be dropped off or picked up in the front of the school and we have an additional morning only car rider drop-off area near the bus entrance. Parents are expected to remain in their cars during arrival and dismissal. Students cannot exit cars until 7:15 when school personnel will be on duty to ensure the safety and supervision of our students. School staff will be in the car lane to assist students arriving and leaving the building from 7:15 – 7:45 and 2:15 – 2:45 only. If your child is dropped off after 7:45 a.m., you must come in the building to sign-in your child.

IMPORTANT:

Due to our School of the Performing Arts program, we have a great number of car riders. We encourage those who are eligible for bus transportation to and from school to use our school bus service to avoid delays entering or leaving Jackson Elementary in the mornings and afternoons.
